DroneSeed is working with commercial foresters to make reforestation more efficient. Their team offers a one-stop solution of drones capable of planting tree seeds and spraying fertilizer and herbicides to keep trees healthy.

Millions of acres of forestland are currently under-utilized. The availability of dependable workers, and the safety concerns of rough terrain, prevent trees from being planted and cared for. Rozalia Project has an amazing collection of efforts being brought together to tackle pollution.

One cool tool they use for volunteer cleanups is their Rozalia Project Marine Debris Data Card to keep tabs on what trash has been collected.

Prevention: stopping trash getting into the water, and remediation: removing trash from the water and shores before it breaks down into micro size pieces, are the cornerstones of Rozalia Project’s belief that we can clean our oceans.

Rozalia Project, from inception to present, has removed 565,000+ pieces of ocean trash from the waters and shorelines of North America by leading a variety of our own and volunteer cleanups with the following featured partnerships and programs.
4) SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
We need knowledge before we can act, thus Rozalia Project has implemented several scientific research projects to develop data from which we can produce solutions.
5) LAND BASED SOLUTIONS
Rozalia Project is promoting several physical land based solutions to reduce the land to sea transport of trash.

Se@Drone

In Delft, Netherlands a team by the name of “Se@Drone” is developing an unmanned surface and underwater drone duo that can pick up trash off the bottom of the sea floor! The surface drone holds the underwater drone during travel and releases it with a winch as a life-line. Once the underwater drone finds trash on the sea floor 4 sides can close around the waste.

3 New SeaDrones: Explorer, Inspector & Developer

Aquaculture makes for a significant portion of the world’s diet. Fish farms have to be attended to however and up until this point it was a matter of diving to inspect, surface, take notes on paper (probably waterproof) and then those would be transcribed. All in all, a longer process with more resources than necessary expended. These drones are capable of inspecting nets, moorings and monitoring fish farms. There are 3 types each run from around $3000 to $4000 to purchase.

SeaVax – Robotic Vacuum Ship

seavax-tank-testing-pv-panels-trackingEarlier this year in March I was one of 50,476 people who donated to a campaign run by Avaaz to help get SeaVax from Phase I into Phase II.

SeaVax drones make up a team of vessels they call SeaNet that collect trash and pump it into a 150-tonne capacity holding bay. Water that gets filtered through comes out the rear of the ship.  Once the transports are full they can be transported ashore on solar powered barges so the waste can then be recycled.

They are even developing sensors for SeaVax to be able to power down when marine life is detected in its trajectory. Due to its adaptable solar panel equipment and a couple of small wind turbines, they estimate SeaVax could treat 89.9 million liters of seawater a year. BlueBird Marine Systems (maker of SeaVax) quotes the SeaVax price at around $3 million dollars per unit. The figure the cleanup cost, based on that price point would be around $1.49 USD per kg of trash collected.

The SeaVax even made an appearance at the Olympics in Rio!

New Water Drones

Through a collaboration between Port of Rotterdam Authority and academic institutions such as Erasmus University in Rotterdam and Port Innovation Lab with the Delft University of Technology new innovations in the line of “do good” drones are starting to make their appearance in the ports. Among the emerging breeds of Water Drones are the “AquaSmartXL” and the “Waste Shark”. The AquaSmartXL is a useful alternative to port surveillance that would normally require a man-operated boat burning fuel. The unmanned Waste Shark is able to collect around 500 kg of wast in the water through its mouth-like opening 35 cm below the surface of the water. It is around the size of a average four door car.
